Scooping the majority of the prizes in Medicine is Dr Lisha Jeena, who graduated cum laude.

Top Medical Student Graduates Cum Laude and Bags Academic Honours

Dean’s Commendations in each of her six years of study, Certificates of Merit in five of six final year subjects, graduating with an MBChB cum laude and receiving several subject prizes like the EB Adams Award for the Highest mark in Medicine and the Eucerine Dermatology award, Dr Lisha Jeena can look back with a huge amount of pride and satisfaction on her Higher Education achievements.

During her studies, Jeena worked as a research placement at CAPRISA and produced two papers: one as a first author for an article in the International Journal of TB and Lung Disease and the second as a co-author for an article accepted by the South African Medical Journal.

The young doctor has showed excellence in her leadership abilities having founded the UKZN branch of Friends of Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF-Doctors without Borders) and being Chairperson of the UKZN Debating Union. She was also a peer mentor and Vice-Chairperson of the Hindu Students Association during her time at Medical School.

In her down time, Jeena enjoys and pursued examinations for ballet and contemporary dance. She was a member of the Flatfoot Dance Company Academy based at UKZN and has also performed Indian dance at the UKZN Medical School’s Hindu Student Association Cultural Evening.

‘Both my parents motivate me to work hard and strive for excellence. One must be grateful for the opportunities availed to her and make good use of those without any excuses. My aim is to show compassion for my patients,’ expressed the 24-year-old Jeena who is currently doing her internship at the Livingstone Hospital in the Eastern Cape.
