Seventeen-year-old Umlazi resident, Mr Andile Mkhungo is excited to have been accepted at UKZN’s Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine.
The young star, who attended Zwelibanzi High School, scored an impressive 92% for Science, 86% for Maths and 81% for English in matric. He was also placed second in the Engen Maths and Science School programme hosted by Mangosuthu University of Technology. The programme provides extra tuition in “gateway” subjects such as Mathematics and Science.
Mkhungo said that his passion for Medicine was kept alive by encouragement received from his mentor, school principal Mr Sbusiso Nkosinathi Maseko, as well as one of his teachers. Study groups also helped him with his academic work.
‘I have always wanted to go to UKZN, so that I can be closer to my sister, who is doing fourth-year Medicine,’ he said.
Mkhungo’s achievements are admirable given his circumstances. He said that he was raised by a single mother who doesn’t have a stable job and that he lives with his mother and younger brother in an informal settlement.
‘My mother is so excited about my achievements and is relieved that if I continue to do well in my studies she will not have to worry about fees as I received a scholarship. She believes that I will become a successful doctor who heals many people.’
Mkhungo enjoys studying and reading books. During his spare time, he plays indigenous games. He hopes to qualify as a surgeon one day.
