Third-year Audiology students commemorated World Hearing Day at a Durban special school on World Hearing Day celebrated on 3 March annually.
Accompanied by their lecturers, the students presented to the staff of RP Moodley Special School in Clare Estate. The school is for children with special needs.
The students conducted a variety of presentations on hearing awareness and conducted screenings for the school community, including learners.
Three students, Mr Khayelihle Khumalo, Ms Aarifah Tayoh and Ms Mishka Jadwat, presented to the community about the impact of hearing loss.
The event aimed at increasing awareness and also to provide health promotion in the community.
After the presentations, students conducted hearing screenings at the school library.
After the awareness campaign, students handed out information pamphlets, brochures, booklets and flyers to the staff regarding hearing loss, ear care and how to communicate with people with hearing loss.
They also distributed pens and notebooks.
The school’s Speech Therapy and Audiologist, Mrs Nishla Maharaj, said she was grateful for the students’ initiative. ‘We really appreciate having the students. Their work is highly appreciated.’
