Research Interests

Cancer Epidemiology and Cancer prevention research, mainly cervical cancer: HPV and cervical screening; The role of HPV on cancers (cervical cancer, anal cancer, and oral pharyngeal/throat); Epidemiology, natural history of HPV on the different cancers e.g. Cervical cancer; Rationalization of cervical cancer screening in the Era of HIV and HPV infection; Development of standardized, programmatic approach to cervical cancer screening and the appropriate use of screening technologies; and Mapping & Modelling of Communicable and Non-communicable diseases with a focus on cancers related to HIV and HPV infections.

Biosketch

Themba G. Ginindza joined the Disciple of Public Health Medicine,  College of Health Sciences at University of KwaZulu-Natal as Epidemiologist and lecturer (August 2013). His academic qualifications include a PhD (UKZN, SA), MSc- Epidemiology (Epi), Dip.Epi (LSHTM, UK), MPH (Epi) (Melbourne, Australia), DCH (AMREF, Kenya). His main research interests include: (1) Sexual & Reproductive research, (2) Cancer Epidemiology and Cancer prevention research: (mainly, HPV-related cancer screening; The role of HPV on cancers; Epidemiology & natural history of HPV on the different cancers; Rationalization of cervical cancer screening during the Era of HIV, and HPV infection; Development of standardized, programmatic approach to cervical cancer screening and the appropriate use of screening technologies), and (3) Mapping & Modelling of Communicable and Non-communicable diseases (focusing on  HIV and HPV-related cancers). He has a special interest on Injury Epidemiology (The population &Economic Burden of Injuries).

He has also been involved in planning, monitoring and evaluation of HIV/AIDS including other STIs programmes, coordination of HIV/AIDS research projects in Swaziland and South Africa, managing and analysing hospital mining data for monitoring admissions and out-patients related to Influenza and pneumonia infections, developing South African Rotavirus surveillance system and involvement in outbreaks and Surveillance. I also have international working experience countries like Malawi, Philippines and Finland.
